Duration: approx. 3 hours
The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden today known as "Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden" is recognized as one of the most beautiful tropical parks in the world. A magnificent oasis for more than 500 different species of plants, including ebony trees of over 300 years, the giant water lilies and the talipot palm tree which blooms only once in its life before dying. The rich collection of plant species of the garden and its beauty make this botanical garden a must see for all tourists visiting our island.
The botanical garden was created in colonial times by Pierre Poivre in 1770, he made the acquisition of the domain "Mon Plaisirs", the former home of the Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais. Pierre Poivre himself a botanist and Philibert Commerson another botanist gathered trees, plants and spices from around the world. From 1770 to 1810 the collection of plants kept on increasing, thanks to several botanists and naturalists who have devoted their lives and fortunes to continue the work of Pierre Poivre. Around 1810 the garden was abandoned by the British who then took possession of the island. It is in 1849 that James Duncan took up the flag and gave back all its charm to this beautiful park.
